This morning on Cspan I heard that there are important cultural differences between Japan and USA on such things as how to run nuclear power plants. I believe it had something to do with Japanese traditional deference to authority and preference to stay within traditions, whether those authority figures and old traditions are correct or not. It seems to me that all Japanese fans of jazz and musicians can play an important role in teaching the value of breaking out of traditions and just doing what seems to be right and best. American jazz is highly routed in this kind of improvisational mindset and so, maybe this could help not just Japan’s power industry but maybe it could help Japan’s society in several other ways as well where fostering innovation and out of box thinking is very very important. I realize this doesn’t have much to do with jazz music directly, but I wanted to pass along this comment to you while you are on tour over there. All the best! Tom
