Our 2012 in Review: What a Fantastic Year It’s Been!

There are only 11 days left in 2012.  The year has absolutely flown by!  But it’s been a year full of so many wonderful experiences and opportunities.  Here’s a snapshot of just a few.

We Won

The award: a gold record.

This year, we won the Phoenix’s Best Jazz Act poll.  It was such an honor to be voted to top act by fans and friends.  We could not have won without your support (and votes!).

New Album

This summer, we recorded and released a new album, Act Naturally, in Japan.  With that CD release, we had not one but two tours in Japan.  On top of that, we had the honor of performing in Tokyo’s famed Cotton Club.

Local Performances

Playing during sunset.

We returned to both Regattabar and Scullers, which by the way was filmed and being edited right now, in 2012.  In the summer, we participated in Downtown Crossing’s summer series and made our debut at the Shalin Liu in Rockport.  We also played at the Mount Auburn Club this fall.  All on top of our residencies at Les Zygomates and Ryles.

Interviews and Press

We had a lot of press this year.  We were live on WICN last month, and we interviewed in several Japanese publications for our new album.  Plus our Scullers performance was highlighted in the Boston Globe’s Fall Arts Preview.  Jazziz featured us twice this year, too.

In addition to our residencies at Ryles and Les Zygomates we have some exciting concerts coming up in 2013 including the Sahara Club in January and a new project of the Yoko Miwa Trio with Special Guest Rebecca Parris. This group is already booked at the Shalin Liu on February 15 but we plan to do a mini tour in the greater New England area so stay posted.

Happy holidays and see you all in 2013!

Need a Break from Holiday Parties? See Us this Saturday!

December can be crazy with a million things to do and events to attend.  Give yourself a break.  Round up your friends for a night of great music instead of another ugly sweater party.

Come out to see us at Les Zygomates this Saturday.  We’ll be playing at 8 pm. Tickets are free, and reservations are recommended but not required.  Give yourself the gift of fantastic jazz.  Your ears will thank you!

A Great Way to Introduce Your Friends to Jazz

You love jazz (that’s why you’re here, right?), but maybe you have friends that you think would like it if they weren’t intimidated by the genre.  Jazz music spans so many styles within the genre that it can often be overwhelming to newbies.

The New England Conservatory’s Jazz Orchestra has a concert on November 29th celebrating Third Stream jazz.  It’s a style that blends classical and jazz which makes it a great introduction to jazz as a whole.  Yoko started out as a classically trained pianist until she was introduced to jazz, and this concert may just spark a similar passion in others.  Bonus?  The concert is free.  Check out their website for the time and location.

If your friends like the introduction, send them over to our YouTube channel to expand their jazz horizons.

November 14 Performance at Scullers Jazz Club in Photos

Didn’t make it to our performance at Scullers last week? Not to worry, we have photos, courtesy of Caroline Alden, capturing fantastic moments from the evening.  You can feel the enthusiasm of the audience and the essence of the music in these photos.  In other words, they’re great!

Our photo series from out Japan tour was a popular feature, so we want to give you a sense of our shows through photos as well.  Thank you to everyone who came out to see us and those who bought up all of our copies of Act Naturally.

Thank You for Making Last Night a Wonderful Success!

To everyone who came out last night, you all are fantastic!  Our return to  Scullers Jazz Club was a fabulous evening full of supportive fans and great music.

The audience was amazing…at a hush when we played but enthusiastically responding to the solos from the opening number “Work” by Thelonius Monk. One highlight was Yoko’s rendition of “Up from the Skies” by Jimi Hendrix in honor of his 70th birthday. Plus, all copies of the new CD Act Naturally sold out quickly!

Our gratitude to Fred Taylor and Scullers Jazz Club! The Boston Globe, Kevin Lowenthal, Eric Jackson, Bob Blumenthal, Ann Braithwaite, Gille Amaral, Jon Garelick, Erin Halvey, Lisa Occhino, Bonnie Johnson, Joe Zupan, WICN, Berklee College of Music, Berklee Groove, Japanese Association of Greater Boston and  Japan Society of Boston. Special thanks to Geroge Beal and Arthur Dahl! Most of all I want to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to the wonderful audience!

Check back next week for photos from last night’s performance.

Catch Us on WICN, Steven Tyler Said What, and Act Naturally Available Stateside

This Saturday, Yoko will make an appearance on Bonnie Johnson’s Colors of Jazz at 4 pm.  Massachusetts fans, and those who want to tune in online, can hear an interview and in-studio performance on WICN NPR 90.5 FM Radio in Worcester, MA.

American fans, get excited! We’ll have limited copies of Act Naturally available at our Scullers performance next week (November 14).  After promoting the CD in Japan twice in the last 6 months, we’ll have a limited number of the album for our local fans.  If you’ve been curious about our newest CD and want to snag a copy without traveling to Japan, get your tickets for our Scullers performance at 8 pm on November 14.  Tickets are just $20.  The winner of Best Jazz Act playing at the winner for Best Jazz Venue will make for an amazing show that you won’t want to miss.

Japanese fans, we’ve got good news for you as well.  Our most recent US album, Live at Scullers, is being released on Japanese label Disk Union.  Just in time for our return to Scullers.

But the great news keeps unfolding.  Steven Tyler approves of our version of Seasons of Wither! A private pilot for the stars and fan of the Yoko Miwa Trio (thank you!) had Steven listen before taking off, Steven truly liked it and was honored! Missed our version? Here’s the Youtube video:

Be Sure to See Us at Our Return Performance at Scullers Jazz Club

We’re still recovering from our performances in Japan, but we’re already looking ahead to our fantastic concert at Scullers Jazz Club on November  14th.  This will be an amazing concert that you won’t want to miss, and our biggest show in Boston since winning The Boston Phoenix’s 2012 Best Jazz Act.

Tickets are $20, and you can buy them online here.  Scullers Jazz Club was also voted Best Jazz Venue in Boston by The Boston Phoenix, so what better time to see the best jazz act then at the best jazz venue?

Our Cotton Club Performance

Having the chance to perform at such a renowned venue in Tokyo was such an amazing experience.  It’s one of the most famous jazz clubs in Japan, and it was such an honor to play here.

We played two shows that evening.  It was an absolutely unforgettable night for all three of us.  For our Boston fans who missed out, don’t forget that we’re playing at Scullers Jazz Club on November 14.  You can buy tickets here.

More Candid Photos from Our Second 2012 Japan Tour

The famous Dotonburi area of Osaka.

We just got back from our whirlwind second tour, so we apologize for the delay in the post this week.  It was an absolutely fantastic time, and we’re so thrilled by all of the support from our fans in Japan.  It was great to perform in Yoko’s hometown of Kobe.

Everyone loves seeing our more “candid” shots in addition to show photos so we’re keeping in the tradition from our last tour in July.

We’re in Japan for the second time this year to promote our CD, Act Naturally.  We were in Kobe, Yoko’s hometown, and performed at the famed Cotton Club in Tokyo yesterday.  We wanted to share some photos for the trip so far to let you get a glimpse of how the trip is going for those who couldn’t attend our shows.
